1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV):
“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
Devotional: “Training for What Matters Most”
As athletes and coaches, we understand the importance of discipline. We wake up early to condition, lift, study film, and refine our craft—because we know preparation leads to performance. Paul reminds Timothy of a deeper truth: while physical training has value, spiritual training is eternal.
Just like reps build strength and miles build endurance, daily moments in Scripture, prayer, and integrity build godliness. God isn’t asking for perfection—He’s calling us to pursue Him with the same focus we give our physical goals. The strength we gain through spiritual discipline doesn’t just prepare us for game day—it equips us for every day, in this life and the next.
If you want to grow in godliness, don’t train alone. Seeking God with other believers will strengthen your faith as you become more like Christ.
